Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans for Hearing Aids

Do you have questions about Medicare-type insurance coverage for hearing aids? It's likely especially if you are seeing ads about Medicare Advantage plans.

First, Medicare Part B does NOT provide any coverage for hearing evaluations for hearing aids nor for hearing aids themselves. Medicare supplement plans do NOT cover hearing aids either.

Some Medicare Advantage plans cover hearing aids. If you see hearing aids listed as "free" on coverage information, the hearing aids are likely either very basic and not very customizable (helpful to some types of hearing loss but not all) or require a higher monthly premium or copay for better levels of hearing aid technology.

It takes some serious investigation to decide on the right plan for each person. With most insurers, you will either pay for coverage through monthly premiums or through higher out of pocket costs (less coverage). Plan for how you will pay for hearing aids either out of pocket or through insurance coverage before deciding on a plan if you think you will need aids soon.
